Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars, has slipped two places in the latest FIFA rankings, dropping from 106th to 108th.
The rankings, released on Thursday by the world football governing body, reflect Kenya’s recent struggles on the international stage.
The decline follows their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Kenya finished third in Group J, behind Cameroon and Zimbabwe, missing out on a coveted spot in the continent’s premier football tournament.
The Stars’ campaign concluded with underwhelming results—a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe and a goalless stalemate against Namibia in their final qualifiers.
Earlier in the campaign, Kenya also faltered against South Sudan in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers, managing a draw and suffering a 2-0 defeat.
Despite this, Kenya secured a place in CHAN as co-hosts alongside Tanzania and Uganda. However, Tanzania’s recent progress has put further pressure on the Harambee Stars.
The Taifa Stars climbed six places to 106th in the rankings, surpassing Kenya and cementing their qualification for AFCON after finishing second in Group H behind DR Congo.
Uganda retained its position as the top-ranked team in the Cecafa region despite slipping one spot to 88th. Meanwhile, Morocco remains the highest-ranked African team, sitting comfortably in 14th place.
Globally, Argentina continues to dominate the FIFA rankings, holding the top spot, followed by France in second and Spain in third.
As Kenya regroups, questions linger over the team’s performance and strategy, with fans eager for a return to the glory days of Kenyan football.
With CHAN fast approaching, Harambee Stars must use the tournament to rebuild and regain their standing on the African football scene.
