Embu Senator Alexander Munyi Mundigi has strongly refuted claims by the Democratic Party of Kenya (DPK) that he campaigned for a rival political aspirant, terming the allegations baseless and procedurally defective.

In a formal response dated December 18, 2025, the Senator, through his legal team, challenged a summons issued by the party accusing him of supporting a candidate other than DPK’s nominee for the Mbeere North parliamentary seat.

Mundigi maintains that the accusations were made without factual backing and in violation of the party’s own disciplinary procedures.

Through lawyer Danstan Omari, the Senator stated that he learned of the allegations while on official duty in Uganda and was not accorded a chance to respond before disciplinary steps were initiated.

He said that upon returning to the country, he sought an audience with the party’s Secretary General to clarify the matter, but instead, a summons was delivered to his personal assistant at Parliament Buildings.

Mundigi argues that the party acted hastily and outside its constitutional mandate.

He points out that under Articles 9 and 10 of the DPK constitution and by-laws, critical decisions involving coalition participation and disciplinary action must be deliberated and resolved by established organs, including the National Delegates Committee and the National Governing Council.

His legal team further noted that the Democratic Party of Kenya is a constituent member of the Kenya Kwanza coalition, a fact that, according to the Senator, allows him to support candidates operating within the broader coalition arrangement.

They emphasized that Mundigi has remained compliant with party obligations, including the regular payment of dues, and has neither resigned from the party nor acted in a manner detrimental to its interests.

The lawyers also criticized threats of expulsion issued without prior consultation, describing them as an attempt to weaken Mundigi’s standing within the party leadership. They maintained that such actions undermine internal democracy and due process.

Despite the dispute, Senator Mundigi insists he remains a loyal member of the Democratic Party of Kenya and continues to discharge his responsibilities as the party’s acting Deputy Party Leader.

He has called for adherence to the party constitution and dialogue to resolve the matter amicably.
