Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko has said Kenya’s legal and institutional framework, identifies forestry as one of the key sectors for investment in order to achieve sustainable development, climate change goals, biodiversity conservation, and landscape restoration.

“Sustainable wood production and use is a global initiative aimed at bolstering the forest sector’s contribution to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the 2015 Paris Agreement, the CBD, and the UNCCD, among other things,” he said.

According to the CS, these strategies will help countries transition to low-carbon economies, improve livelihoods, and create more sustainable landscapes and cities.

On opportunities for scaling up sustainable production and use, CS Tobiko said the adoption of innovative forestry technologies such as drone technology, that increase the productivity of forests, restore degraded landscapes and promote trees on farms is key.

On circularity, the CS said that sustainable wood production and use will allow the reduction of waste through re-using and recycling of wood by-products.

On governance, CS Tobiko said county governments and Community Forest Associations need to be strengthened to support the devolution of important forestry functions and strengthen engagement in forest conservation efforts.

The meeting was attended by Environment Ministers Lee White (Gabon), Byeong-am Choi (Korea), Rosalia Matondo (Congo) Hiroshi Orita (Japan Forestry Agency) Maria Helena (Deputy Director-General FAO) among others.
