EPRA closes illegal gas refilling site in Machakos after raid

A multi-agency team led by the Energy Petroleum and Regulatory Authority (EPRA) raided a farm in Machakos County after receiving information about an illegal gas refilling site.

In a statement, EPRA revealed that its agents, together with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), carried out the raid on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 19.

EPRA detailed that the agents discovered that the owner of the property had established an illegal gas refilling plant.

During the operation, gas cylinders of various brands were recovered.

EPRA detailed that the suspect had been refilling the cylinders without the authorization of the respective brands.

“Yesterday at around 3pm, a multi-agency team coordinated by the Authority and comprising DCI and OCPD, Mwala, operating on intelligence reports, raided a farm in Utithini area, location of Masii , Mwala Sub-County in Machakos County.

“An unlicensed LPG tanker and a licensed cantering truck loaded with full cylinders were also found,” the statement reads in part.

EPRA explained that Wednesday’s exercise was necessary as such illegal sites posed risks to Kenyans.

Kenyans with information about such sites were therefore encouraged to file a report with the authorities.

“These illegal refilling plants are a danger to the public and urge you to purchase LPG cylinders only from authorized dealers.

“We urge the public to remain alert and report suspicious LPG transactions through the hotline number: 0709336000 or via email: info@epra.go.ke“EPRA stated.
