Ex-CJ Mutunga accompanies three activists Mwangi, Hanifa and Hussein to DCI over abductions

Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga is accompanying three activists who have been in hiding due to fears of abduction to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters on Monday.

In a statement released on Sunday, Mutunga named the activists as Boniface Mwangi, Hanifa Adan, and Hussein Khalid, the executive director of Haki Africa.

The trio is scheduled to appear at the DCI headquarters located on Kiambu Road at 11 am on Monday.

Mutunga expressed concern over recent incidents, stating, “Tomorrow at 11 am I shall accompany Hanifa Adan, Hussein Khalid, and Boniface Mwangi to DCI_Kenya HQs on Kiambu Road. Mwangi was almost abducted outside the City Mortuary on Friday contrary to Art. 238(2)(b) of the Constitution. Join us in solidarity,” he said on X.

These developments come amidst a spate of abductions targeting individuals vocal in their opposition to the Finance Bill, 2024.

Notable among those arrested include blogger Billy Simani and Dr. Austin Omondi, known as Ja Prado, who have since been released.

On Sunday night, Shad Khalif was also abducted from Sanasana in South B, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Khalif, an outspoken critic of the Finance Bill 2024, was taken on Sunday evening by unidentified persons who had followed him to the area.

A CCTV video circulating on social media shows Khalif being forced into a white Toyota Prado before the vehicle drives away.

His abduction occurred shortly after Dr. Austin Omondi’s kidnapping while organizing a blood donation drive for injured protestors along Forest Road in Nairobi.

Dr. Omondi was released on Sunday evening following public outcry.

Earlier in the week, blogger Billy Simani, alias Crazy Nairobian, was arrested on Friday, June 21, and released on Saturday, June 22, evening.

In a statement after his release, Simani thanked Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo for her intervention, reassuring his supporters of his safety.

Leslie Muturi, son of Attorney General Justine Mutrui, was also reportedly arrested by Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) officers on Saturday night in Lavington.

His detention was disclosed by Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje, with Muturi subsequently released on Sunday evening.

The recent abductions of these activists have sparked widespread condemnation from Kenyans, with concerns raised about the use of state machinery to intimidate youth exercising their democratic rights during protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
