Ex-Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan To Lead Election Observation Mission

The observers are scheduled to stay in the country until August 12, 2022.

Following a government invitation, the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) has deployed a full-fledged short-term Election Observation Mission (EOM) to the Kenya General Election.

It is made up of 21 short-term observers (STOs) from across the continent, drawn primarily from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Election Management Bodies (EMBs), and academia.

His Excellency, Goodluck Jonathan, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, leads the Mission, who is assisted by Mr. Badessou Soukolgué, Executive Director of the EISA.

According to Goodluck, the observers will be deployed across the country in all regions, specifically ten counties, to observe the final stages of political parties’ campaigns, election day procedures, and results aggregation processes.

The observers are scheduled to stay in the country until August 12, 2022.

“The Mission’s assessment of the electoral process will be guided by the principles and obligations set out in the 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG), the 2002 OAU/AU Declaration of the Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa, the Declaration of Principles on International Election Observation (DoP) and the Principles for Election Management, Monitoring and Observation (PEMMO) as well as the legal framework governing the elections in the Republic of Kenya. The EISA EOM will issue a preliminary statement on its findings at a press conference on 11 August 2022,” he said.
