The government has been urged to enhance the registration of boda boda exercise to enable many riders to get registered on time.

Kilifi county bodaboda operators said the ongoing boda boda registration exercise can also be carried to the deputy county commissioners’ offices so that they can be registered at the nearest place.

Led by their chairman Hamisi Katambo said all the boda boda operators are being forced to travel to Kilifi county Huduma centre for the registration exercise.

They spoke outside Huduma Centre during the exercise which was flagged off by Tourism Permanent Secretary Zainab Hussain.

Mr Katambo said Kilifi county is a vast county and that the government may not achieve its target if they don’t take the exercise to the nearest place.

He also challenged the government to address the fuel shortages in the country adding that boda boda is the worst hit by that shortage.

Kilifi county Commissioner Kutswa Olaka said last year more than 1700 people died as a result of Boda boda.

Mr Olaka urged the boda boda not to be used by politicians, especially during this period of election and campaign period.

He said the government will move down to the grassroots level to sensitize boda boda operators and also to hear their grievances.

Tourism PS Zainab Hussein said the Boda Boda sector in Kenya has employed over 2million youth with Kilifi having more than 10,000 youths.

She said there is a need for the government to bring sanity in the boda boda sector by registering the boda boda operators so that they can weed out those criminal people.

Hussein said in future the government is considering moving closer to the boda boda operators so that they can be registered at the nearest point instead of coming to Huduma Centre Kilifi.
