Queen of the Mara Triangle, a much-loved lioness in Kenya’s Maasai Mara game reserve, has died.
She was around ten years old and commanded the Angama pride, which resided in the greater Mara reserve.
Nicknamed Mama Kali, the big cat was a sensation to both domestic and international tourists.
According to locals, Mama Kali perished last week in an alleged human-wildlife dispute.
In 2020, researchers from the Mara Predator Programme collared her so she could be followed and studied.
The collar would follow and monitor her every move in an attempt to keep her safe, reduce human-wildlife conflict, and eventually allow researchers and park managers to understand more about the life of a lion.
The collar ceased broadcasting a signal in early February 2022, a few kilometers north of the park, according to Angama Safari Camp.
