Fifteen Counties to Gain Attorney General Offices in Justice Expansion Plan

Fifteen counties are set to benefit from new Attorney General offices in a government initiative aimed at improving access to justice in underserved regions.

The decentralization plan, approved by the Cabinet, seeks to establish Attorney General services in all 47 counties, with operations in the new offices slated to begin in January 2025.

The counties receiving the new offices include Nyandarua, Narok, Tana River, Tharaka-Nithi, Baringo, Trans Nzoia, Makueni, Lamu, Vihiga, Marsabit, Kajiado, Isiolo, Wajir, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Kiambu.

Services to be offered include civil litigation, public trustee, marriage registration under the Registrar General, and the National Legal Aid Service.

“This effort will bridge the gap in service delivery for counties like Narok, Tharaka-Nithi, and Marsabit that have previously lacked direct access to legal services,” said Solicitor General Shadrack Mose.

Currently, the Attorney General’s offices operate in only 13 counties, including Mombasa, Kisumu, and Kakamega.

This expansion aligns with the government’s commitment to equitable service delivery, allowing all Kenyans, regardless of location, to access essential legal services without undue travel.

The rollout underscores the government’s pledge to enhance justice accessibility and ensure balanced development across the country.
