Finland’s President Graces 75th Europe Day Celebrations in Nairobi

Finland’s President Alexander Stubb joined dignitaries, diplomats, and business leaders in Nairobi to mark the 75th anniversary of Europe Day, commemorating the historic Schuman Declaration that laid the groundwork for the modern European Union.

Hosted by the Delegation of the European Union to Kenya, the ceremony took place during the EU-Kenya Business Forum, symbolizing the deepening economic and political ties between Europe and Africa.

The highlight of the event was the official launch of the European Chamber of Commerce in Kenya—an initiative aimed at strengthening trade and investment links between the EU and Kenya.

President Stubb, speaking at the event, praised the enduring legacy of the Schuman Declaration, calling it “a vision of peace turned into a reality of prosperity.”

He noted that as the EU celebrates 75 years of unity, “our commitment to shared values—democracy, peace, and cooperation—remains unwavering, especially in a world facing geopolitical instability.”

Europe Day, observed annually on May 9, honors the 1950 declaration by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposing a new form of political cooperation in Europe.

This initiative, aimed at making future wars between European nations unthinkable, laid the foundation for what would eventually become the European Union.

This year’s celebrations in Nairobi come at a time when the EU and Kenya are reinforcing their partnership through enhanced trade frameworks, green initiatives, and support for regional stability.

The event showcased Europe’s commitment to global partnerships—and to a peaceful, united future.
