A fisherman who was in company of two coworkers drowned in Kenyatta Dam in Kamuri Village, Kuresoi North last evening, with the two lucky enough to swim to safety.
Following the incident, the Subcounty Police Commander for Kuresoi North, Juddah Gathenge, imposed a halt to fishing activities at the dam.
According to the police commander, safety precautions must be put in place before regular fishing operations in the area can resume.
Divers from Bomet County traveled to the region to assist in the retrieval mission after the search was called to take place last evening due to a scarcity of divers in the county to respond to such occurrences.
Area MP Alfred Mutai observed the body being retrieved from the water.
Mutai asked the county government to fence the dam, claiming it had become a dangerous environment, especially because children in the area had been drinking from it to quench their thirst.
“We must plan well so that we can look at the strategies that will not lead to hostility later. We, as a county, need to train divers on safety issues,” Mutai said.
Residents have asked the Nakuru County Government to ensure that the dam’s equipment is serviced on a regular basis in order to avoid such incidents.
