Foreigner Arrested With Election Materials Released

A foreigner who was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday with IEBC election stickers has been released.

The foreigner is an employee of Smartmatic International B.V, the company procured by IEBC to provide technology for the August 9th General Election.

According to NPS spokesperson Bruno Shioso, investigations revealed that the stickers recovered are bone-fide property of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

NPS said the foreigner was placed into custody due to the sensitivity of elections material and the fact that the stickers had been carried in personal luggage, hence due diligence needed to be conducted.

“The arrest, impounding and subsequent investigations into the material were necessitated by the sensitivity of election material,” he said.

According to the police, the stickers were not declared in accordance with the law and were not accompanied by an IEBC official, as is standard procedure.

“…police, as per standard procedure and arrangement with IEBC were not notified of such an import beforehand to provide necessary security and escort,” read the statement.

After interrogations, the suspect was released from custody and the stickers were handed to IEBC.
