Police in Ndhiwa are looking for a man suspected of killing a 17-year-old Form Three student on Sunday in a fight at a bar in Lwanda trading centre in Homa Bay County.

The suspect had accompanied the deceased, Bonventure Ochieng Omondi, to a bar for a drink when the two disagreed and began fighting.

Omondi, 17, was slashed with a machete and was rushed at Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

The suspect is said to have dropped out of school in Standard Seven some years ago and was involved in criminal activities in the village.

Omondi who was a student at Lwanda Mixed Secondary Schoolis said to have died due to excessive bleeding.

Witnesses to the evening incident said the two exchanged words before the suspect left.

According to Kobita location Chief Joash Osuju, a report made at Ndhiwa police station indicated that the suspect, identified as Abrahams Ooko, left the bar and returned with a panga.

“Many people at the joint thought they were engaging in a normal friendly argument. However, they were surprised when it turned chaotic and the suspect slashed his colleague,” Osuju said.

When he returned back, Ooko found Omondi seated at the table where they were drinking earlier and slashed him several times on both hands as he was trying to block the panga.

“He was trying to shield his head from the impact of the machete when his hands were cut,” Osuju said.

The suspect fled the bar and went into hiding after the attack.

The student’s body was taken to the referral hospital mortuary.

A manhunt has been launched for the suspect.

Residents with information on the whereabouts of the suspect have been urged to report to the police.
