Anne Nderitu, the Registrar of Political Parties (RPP), has announced that 47 Kenyans have been cleared to run for president as independent candidates in the August 9 general election.
The number of presidential candidates could be the highest in Kenyan history if the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) approves them.
Deputy President William Ruto, Raila Odinga of the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance, and Jimi Wanjigi of the Safina Party are among the leading contenders.
According to Nderitu, 7,111 people are attempting to run for various elective seats as independent candidates across the country.
There are 104 candidates for governor, 141 for Senate, 110 for Woman Representative, 944 for Members of Parliament, and 5, 765 for the House of Representatives (MCAs).
