The remains of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari were laid to rest on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in his hometown of Daura.
Buhari, who served Nigeria both as a military ruler and later as a democratically elected president, died in London on Sunday at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.
His body was flown home aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other senior government officials.
Upon arrival at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina, the casket—draped in the green and white national flag—was received by President Bola Tinubu and other dignitaries before being airlifted to Daura.
Funeral prayers were held at Buhari’s private residence, led by the Chief Imam of Katsina, with the final rites conducted in accordance with Islamic tradition at 5:50pm.
A 21-gun salute followed, as Army Generals and Service Chiefs carried the former leader’s remains to his final resting place.
The Federal Government declared a public holiday to honour the late president, allowing citizens to observe the proceedings.
Thousands lined the streets of Daura, paying silent tribute as the cortège passed through the town where Buhari was born and lived for much of his life.
In attendance were state governors, former heads of state, cabinet members, Islamic clerics, and family members, all united in grief and remembrance.
Describing Buhari as a man of discipline and unwavering patriotism, tributes poured in from within and beyond Nigeria. “He lived simply and served with integrity,” said Ismaila Ibrahim, a long-time neighbour in Daura.
The burial brings to a close a chapter in Nigeria’s history, marking the end of a life dedicated to service, sacrifice, and national duty.
