Former President Uhuru Lands In DRC For Peace Talks

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta is in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for high-level talks with DRC President Phillip Tshisekedi about the Eastern DRC peace process.

Burundi’s president, Everiste Ndayishimiye, will also participate in the talks, as well as EAC Secretary General Dr. Peter Mathuki, who will join the two-day mission in DRC as a facilitator.

The EAC-led peace process dialogue has been reenergized to include local DRC community leaders and stakeholders in order to bring a comprehensive solution to the security situation.

The meeting comes just a week after EAC Heads of State met for a high-level consultative meeting on the peace process in Eastern DRC in order to strengthen the political track.

The meeting, presided over by President Everiste Ndayishimiye, committed that all seven EAC partner states will now be fully involved in the process, with each Head of State sending a technical advisor to assist the EAC peace facilitator.

The heads of state reaffirmed their commitment to contribute to the EAC special fund for peace process implementation.

The EAC is planning a peace summit at the end of the year to strengthen the complementary roles of the EAC-led peace process and the Luanda process, among other things.

The next session of the peace dialogue on the security situation in Eastern DRC is scheduled to begin in Nairobi, Kenya on November 21st, 2022.
