Four Senior Government Staff Arrested Over Fake Academic Certificates

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested four public officers on October 30 for using fake academic certificates to secure government positions.

EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi confirmed the arrests, revealing that the individuals were found working with falsified academic credentials.

Two of the suspects were employed at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)—one as an assistant elections officer and the other in the revenue allocation department.

The other two worked at the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority and Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company, respectively.

The suspects are currently held at the EACC Integrity Centre Police Station and are scheduled to appear in the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on October 31.

The arrests are part of a broader nationwide crackdown on forged academic certificates, as the EACC aims to curb a surge in forgery cases among public sector employees.

An EACC quarterly report highlights a troubling increase in cases of individuals securing high-profile government roles through fake degrees and diplomas.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has identified over 2,000 cases across 331 government institutions, including senior officials in ministries and parastatals.

The crackdown emphasises EACC’s commitment to restoring integrity in government hiring processes amid rising concerns over certificate forgery.
