Fugitive Escaping Rwanda Set For Extradition

Mr. Nathan Loyd Ndungu has been detained at the Gigiri Police Station awaiting a ruling on extradition proceedings.

The suspect was sentenced by Kacyiru Primary Court on 27th July 2012. After the sentence, the convict flew outside the Court’s jurisdiction.

As a result, an international warrant of arrest was issued to ensure he is extradited to serve his sentence.

Mr. Nathan has a dual citizenship as a Kenyan and American. He was born on 24 Marc 1970 in Mombasa.

He is said to have committed the offense of pledging as a security to property belonging to another person. He was at the time the Chief Executive Officer of DN international and resided in Kacyiru, Kigali City.

On the 18th October 2011, the prosecution indicted Mr. Nathan for the offense. On 27th September 2012, the primary Court tried Mr. Nathan in absentia where it was found that the accused, a business person representing DN international company which invested in building 28 houses in Masaka Sector in the City of Kigali sold them to various persons.

Therefore, the Court convicted Nathan Loyd for selling property to another person, coupled with fraud as well as deceit and sentenced him to serve five years’ imprisonment.

On 17th November 2017 Mr. Nathan challenged the judgement. The higher Court dismissed his claim and upheld the judgement rendered on 27th September 2012.

Following his sentencing, Interpol issued a red alert notice on 24th February 2012 to track his movements in aid of his arrest.

On 31st January 2022 he arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. He was arrested on arrival by INTERPOL.

He was thereafter detained at Parklands Police Station pending verification of the information in the red alert.

The Interpol handed him over to director transnational crimes.

Pursuant to his arrest, the prosecution filed an application pleading with the Court to grant them 21 days’ custodial order awaiting the arrival of extradition documents from Rwanda to initiate the extradition proceedings.

The court ordered his detention at Gigiri police station until Friday 4th 2022 when it will give a ruling concerning the application.
