The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has recommended serious charges against several Members of Parliament.
The MPs who are allied to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, are wanted for their alleged roles in planning, mobilizing, and financing recent anti-government protests in June this year.
Among those facing potential charges is Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru Mwangi, who is accused of inciting others to commit an offense as outlined in Section 391 of the Penal Code.
The DCI has identified Mwangi alongside fellow DP Gachagua’s aides Wambugu, Theuri, and his Embakasi Central MP Gakuya, as key figures connected to the protests.
Reports suggest that these MPs were involved in organizing meetings at Hotel Boulevard in Nairobi.
In addition to incitement charges, Mwangi is also facing allegations of money laundering under the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act.
Over 50 people lost their lives during the protests, while property worth billions including the Parliament was destroyed during the protests in late June and July 2024.
During a shocking presser, Deputy President had revealed to Kenyans that the National Intelligence Service had a role in the protests by not briefing the President adequately.
He also said the NIS was plotting to link him to the chaos, alongside former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The summoning of the leaders, Gachagua says, undermines his position of the Deputy President, and it is only an intimidation tactic.
The accused MPs have yet to release official statements regarding the allegations.
