Gachagua: Sakaja’s poor leadership has turned Nairobi into city of stench

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has pointed fingers at the government, particularly Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, accusing him of turning the city into what he termed a stench.

Taking it to his social media after addressing a public rally at Wakulima market in Nairobi on Friday, January 30, 2026, the former deputy president has said that the misdeeds of the government have turned Nairobi city into a stinking city despite it having a global reputation.

Rigathi has said that the united opposition will come to clear the mess once they assume power after the 2027 general election.

“Nairobi stands tall in the World as a city of great reputation, but the misdeeds of a poor and national government have turned the city into a stench. We shall not keep quiet as goons under police supervision wreak havoc in the city and among Kenyans,” Gachagua’s statement read in part.

“After meeting and engaging the IG of police this afternoon, we met and greeted the great people of Wakulima in Nairobi and reported to them what we discussed; as a people, we shall not watch our nation descend into anarchy, we shall call out impunity by its name and meet it head on ahead of the 10th August 2027 polls,” it added.

Gachagua was speaking moments after a meeting held between the United Opposition and the Inspector General of police. The opposition had gone to deliver a formal petition to the Inspector General of Police, demanding accountability for the escalating police brutality and lawlessness.

The united opposition has now announced the resumption of their gatherings, giving the government two weeks to heed their demands, failure to which they shall call for a mass action.

Gachagua’s sentiments about Nairobi city ahead of the general elections indicate a looming battle between the government’s side and the united opposition to take control of the capital city leadership.

The current UDA governor, Johnson Sakaja, will be expected to battle it out with a candidate from the United Opposition.
