General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, issued a formal apology to the United States after a series of provocative posts on X (formerly Twitter).

Earlier that day, Muhoozi posted that the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) was suspending all cooperation with the U.S. Embassy in Kampala.
He claimed the embassy was colluding with opposition leader Bobi Wine, whom he accused of “kidnapping himself” after Wine went into hiding following the disputed January 15 elections.
Roughly an hour later, Muhoozi deleted the posts and issued a retraction, stating, “I want to apologise to our great friends the United States… I was being fed with wrong information”.
He confirmed he had spoken with the U.S. Ambassador and that military cooperation, including operations in Somalia, would continue as usual.
This sudden reversal followed significant international pressure and calls from U.S. lawmakers, including Senator Jim Risch, for sanctions against Muhoozi due to reports of election-related violence and threats against opposition members.
