Gladys Chania and Maurice Mbugua, the prime suspects in the murder of George Mwangi, have been detained for seven days.
The two will be held in police custody investigations into the murder mystery continues.
Kiambu Senior Resident Magistrate Wilson has ordered that the two appear in court on October 24 for further instructions.
Chania was apprehended by detectives on Friday. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Chania is believed to have planned the murder after learning about her husband’s alleged affair with a secretary at a local school.
Mwangi, a Rwandan contractor, arrived in the country on September 13.
Chania is suspected of collaborating with a new employee and other accomplices in the execution of her husband.
They had been married for 20 years and had three children.
“However, according to multiple sources, their union appeared to be in trouble because the woman spent most of her time at their Thika home while Mwangi stayed at the magnificent five-bedroomed Mang’u residence whenever he was in the country,” DCI said.
The alleged affair began shortly after the woman met Mwangi while looking for a rental apartment, according to the DCI.
He offered her one of his nearby rental properties.
The alleged affair was reportedly not hidden because the two spent a lot of time together whenever Mwangi was in the country.
Mwangi had gone to a family function in Kimunyu with his love interest on the day he was murdered.
Chania was also present at the event.
According to witnesses, the alleged lover was driving Mwangi’s double cabin truck after the function and they returned to Mang’u.
Chania had already left and was inside the house when the two arrived.
That was the last time Mwangi was seen alive until his body was discovered in Kieni forest by workers at the Kiamunyeki tea plantation on Wednesday.
The body was discovered in the forest wrapped in black polythene beneath a pile of cartons and empty cement bags.
Detectives believe the suspect called 911 after dumping the body to file a missing persons report.
The investigating detectives also learned that on the eve of the murder, Chania hired a new employee, Morris Kamau, after John Mwangi, who had worked for her for four years, allegedly failed to return home after being sent to deposit money on MPesa.
