Government Bans Public Beach Swimming Past 5.30pm

Swimming on public beaches has been prohibited after 5:30 p.m.

Salim Mvurya, Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, also prohibited inebriated people from swimming on Monday.

CS Mvurya, speaking at Kongo Beach in Kwale County, said a multi-agency team from relevant agencies has been tasked with enforcing the restriction in the Indian Ocean and Lake Victoria.

He also stated that officials will begin a crackdown on unseaworthy boats, enforce the correct usage of life jackets, and inspect the jackets’ standards.
The decision follows an event at Mombasa’s Pirates Beach, where 11 family members were involved in a boat accident that killed two people.

The family lost two relatives in the Sunday evening accident, a man and a woman, and one is still in the Intensive Care Unit.
