Government Boosts Security Around High Powerlines

The government has increased surveillance on critical power routes in Naivasha in response to vandalism and economic sabotage acts.

Naivasha Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Mutua Kisilu said the sub-county houses critical infrastructure such as five evacuation high voltage power lines, a dry port, power substations, and water projects, all of which the government wants to protect.

A special surveillance unit has been formed, according to Mutua, as part of broader mitigation measures taken by a multi-agency team.

Security personnel, Kenya Transmission Company [Ketraco], Kenya Power, and the Water Resources Authority will lias to ensuring the protection of key infrastructure such as power lines.

The decision comes just weeks after the government expressed worry after many power towers along the Olkaria-Lessos high-voltage line in Naivasha’s Longonot district and Kayole estate were damaged, threatening a power blackout if the problem was not resolved quickly.

The DCC did remark, however, that Ketraco engineers had already finished repairing and restoring the vandalized towers along the 400kv Olkaria –Lessos line in Naivasha, and that the power systems were up and running.

Kenya Power was losing generators due to theft and vandalism of copper cables, according to the DCC, with Naivasha reporting 32 occurrences of generator theft in the four months leading up to the ban.
