Government releases funds for Thika-Makongeni Road upgrade

Road users plying the Thika-Garissa highway are set for a major reprieve after the Government committed funds to decongest the Thika-Makongeni road.

The road, known for major gridlocks during rush hours, will now have two service lanes and new matatu stages constructed to ease traffic flow.

Currently, it takes close to 2 hours to drive through Thika Town to either Garissa or Nairobi Counties.

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA); awarded the contract to Saxon Enterprises. It is the same firm that decongested Kangundo Road after years of unending traffic jams.

Thika traders have lauded KeNHA for the move, reassuring that they would fully cooperate with the contractor.

The works are part of the Performance-Based Contracts(PBC) through which works are paid based on performance. Under PBC, the supervising engineers are held to account for the works paid for.

The PBC contractor on-site is penalized for potholes on the road under its jurisdiction and also reports of any illegal encroachment on the road reserve.
