Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has assured schools and parents that the government is actively addressing issues arising from underfunding in some public schools following a glitch in capitation disbursement.
Speaking at the inaugural graduation ceremony of Riragia Technical and Vocational College (TVC) in Marani Sub-county, Kisii County, CS Ogamba acknowledged that certain schools received lower-than-expected funds due to what he termed as a possible error in the allocation process.
“We are working closely with affected schools to correct the discrepancies and ensure that all institutions receive their rightful capitation,” said the CS.
This year marks the first time that the government released second-term capitation funds in May, a move intended to enhance financial planning and improve learning conditions in schools. Traditionally, the disbursements occurred later in the academic year.
Ogamba further reassured parents that the government remains committed to supporting learners, noting that examination fees for eligible students will be fully covered.
He revealed that the government had disbursed Ksh 21 billion in capitation to public schools last month. The funds are released in three phases annually: 50 percent in the first term, 30 percent in the second, and 20 percent in the third.
The Ministry of Education has urged school heads to report any anomalies promptly for swift resolution, as efforts continue to stabilize funding across the education sector.
