Governor Amos Nyaribo Faces Second Impeachment Proceedings in Nyamira County

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo is entering a turbulent political chapter as he braces for a second impeachment vote scheduled for Tuesday, September 10. The Nyamira County Assembly has officially approved the proceedings against the governor, sparking renewed scrutiny over his leadership.

The impeachment motion, initiated by County Assembly member Evans Juma, cites allegations of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, and misconduct.

In October 2023, Nyaribo thwarted an attempt to remove him from office when 18 members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted against the motion, while 16 supported it. A key directive from his party, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), encouraged its members to vote against the impeachment, enabling Nyaribo to retain his position in a politically charged environment.

Currently, the Nyamira County Assembly is comprised of 20 elected MCAs and 15 nominated members. The UPA holds the majority with six members, closely followed by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) with four. Other parties, including Jubilee, Ford Kenya, Wiper, UDA, and ANC, account for the remaining seats.

The forthcoming motion, which spans 19 pages, lists 12 specific charges against Nyaribo. Accusations include the improper flagging of empty containers presented as medical supplies, illegal recruitment practices, and failure to comply with court orders, amplifying concerns among the electorate about his governance.
