The county government of Kisumu has launched a fish processing and storage facility at Jubilee Market.
Fish filleting and scaling is the major activity that will be carried on in the facility by fish mongers in the market and it has cost KSh.2.5 million.
Speaking during the launch, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said the facility will greatly help in fish handling, processing, and productivity.
Apart from improving public health and sanitation, it will be a source of income for the fishmongers.
“The fish processing facility will directly benefit a total of about fifty men and women who are mainly youth”, he said.
The project is being implemented by the Agriculture Sector Development Support Programme (ASDSP II) a five-year programme (2017-2022) financed by the Government of Kenya (National and county Governments), the Government of Sweden (SIDA)and the European Union (EU).
Other than the fish processing and storage facility, ASDSP II is in the process of rolling out innovation projects in its three priority value chains, with an estimated cost of Kshs. 25million in the current financial year 2022/2023.
They include brick energy saving stoves for fish farmers, construction of two fish processing facilities at Jubilee and Obunga fish markets, solar powered cold storage reefer for chicken, live bird cages for chicken value chain actors and, clay brooding jikos for chicken farmers.
However, the governor has tasked the beneficiaries to manage and maintain the facility.
“I wish to encourage the beneficiaries (fish mongers) to be good custodians of this facility so that it can help uplift your living standards, ” he said.
