Governor Ngilu rolls out healthcare for all

Governor Charity Ngilu kicked off countywide registration for the dubbed “Kitui Universal Health Care dubbed (Kitui-UHC) with NHIF officials at Kitui’s Agricultural Training Centre on Tuesday.

Ngilu said through the co-pay scheme, each beneficiary household will contribute Sh3,000 while her administration will top up the remaining Sh3,000 for a full-year comprehensive medical cover for the whole family.

“Under the Universal Healthcare plan, more than 85,000 families will receive Kitui-UHC from NHIF. The insurance cover will allow Kitui residents to affordably receive medical services in health facilities within and outside our county including private hospitals and referral hospitals such as Kenyatta National Hospital,” the governor said.

She said registration is ongoing in all the 40 Wards in the county and urged residents to embrace the program-“Kitui Afya Bora”.

The county boss further said that member households will be able to access a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services in all public and private NHIF accredited healthcare facilities across Kitui, Kenya as well as referral hospitals and even abroad.

In addition, the covered residents will enjoy services like accidents and emergency care, maternal care, renal dialysis, cancer treatment, radiology, family planning and all surgical procedures including organ transplants, among others.

She caused laughter when she said, “Kitui Medical cover ni thao tatu tu na uko sorted!”

The governor who was backed by Executive members of her cabinet and sub county administrators and among others emphasised that “My government will pay half of the annual subscription fee for Kitui families to NHIF aimed at kuauwa muio wa uiiti ni mama NHIF vamwe na kaunti ya Kitui. 

Simply translated (lessen or put health burden on NHIF and Kitui County Government). 

“Let us also remember that I am one a pioneer governor in the history of Kitui, to introduce this insurance that will over 120,000 previously uninsured families under medical cover,” she said.
