Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has chaired an emergency Cabinet meeting to address the issue of striking doctors in Nairobi City County – By Gerald Gekara.
In the meeting, the governor reiterated the position of the county in ensuring that the needs of health care workers have been met, and was willing to work with the Nairobi Metropolitan Service to implement this.
“As we battle the COVID-19 pandemic, my administration in partnership with NMS remains committed to ensure a functional public healthcare system as we all strive to flatten the curve, and the welfare of our health workers remains the cornerstone of this endeavor.” said Sonko.
County workers have staged demonstrations citing lack of the government’s commitment to meet their demands, plunging the public health care sector into crisis.
The health workers have attached their protests to the ongoing investigations into the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority, over corruption and overpricing of PPEs.
Despite this, the ministry of health has called upon the striking workers to be patient as the county governments engage those who have not been paid their COVID-19 allowance, as well as insurance.
