The government has postponed the official launch of the Maisha Namba and Digital ID which was to be presided over by President William Ruto.

In a statement on Friday, Immigration Principal Secretary Julius Bitok cited unavoidable circumstances as the reason behind the rescheduling.

“We wish to inform the public and all the stakeholders that, due to unavoidable circumstances, the official launch of the Maisha Namba and the digital ID ecosystem that was to be presided over by His Excellency, the President William Ruto, CGH, on October 2, 2025, at the Athletics Club, Nakuru County has been postponed,” reads the statement in part.

He also noted that there is ongoing public participation on Maisha Namba and the digital ID.

The government was to launch the registration for the proposed Maisha Namba digital ID in Nakuru County, starting Monday, October 2.

Maisha Namba envisioned as a 14-digit Unique Personal Identifier (UPI), will be assigned to newborns at birth, serving as a lifelong identification number.

This unique identifier will be incorporated into various official documents, including birth certificates, Maisha cards, driver’s licenses, and even death certificates.

Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary (PS) Bitok drew parallels between Maisha Namba and the Social Security numbers used by citizens and residents of the United States.
