High Cost Of Fuel Causes a Surge In Bread Prices

Kenyans have lamented a recent shoot in price of bread, which stems from the recent rise in costs of fuel. – By Gerald Gekara.

The cost of bread has increased by between Sh5 and Sh10, with bakers seemingly passing new additional cost in price of wheat to consumers.

A 400 gramme loaf of Superloaf bread has been reported to sell at Sh55 from Sh50, while an 800 grammes of Festive brand selling at Sh100 from Sh92.

Broadways has however maintained its price at Sh50 for the 400 grammes loaf.

Petrol prices hit a nine-year high in March, attributed to the rising costs of crude oil, and taxes associated with the commodity in the country.

Producers of services such as electricity and manufactured goods are also expected to factor in the higher cost of petroleum, unleashing pricing pressure across the economy with ramifications on the cost of living measure.
