High Court Judge Teresia Matheka Launches Court Annexed Mediation In Makueni

As the Judiciary continues its multi-door approach to people-centered Justice, High Court Judge Teresia Matheka has launched Court Annexed Mediation is a solution for you by you in Makueni.

The Chief Justice of Kenya, Martha Koome through her deputy Philomena Mwilu said that justice is not a one-size-fits-all approach and it should address the needs of the people.

She also said that Kenya must diversify, adapt and adopt systems that are responsive to the unique justice needs of our citizenry.

The Chief Justice said that Kenyan Judiciary is championing a multi-door approach to justice that includes mediation, arbitration, conciliation, and the time-honoured traditional justice systems under the Alternative Justice Systems (AJS).

“One pressing matter that we must address is the establishment of a standardised ethics and disciplinary framework for mediators in Kenya. Mediation, in its essence, requires trust in the process and the mediator.” said Koome.

The Judiciary said that Kenya must ensure that mediators are held to the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and ethics. By making sure there is a system in place to discipline those who falter, and by constantly reviewing and updating our practices to meet global benchmarks.

In 2016, the Judiciary launched the pilot phase of the Court-Annexed Mediation Programme at the Family and Commercial Divisions of the High Court in Milimani.

The Court Annexed Mediation programme has since expanded to cover 43 Mediation Registries across the country with an average settlement rate of 52%. The CAM Registries support 101 court stations and sub-registries across the country.
