The Kenya Youth Organisation (KYO) has raised objections over Charles Nyachae’s suitability to chair the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), citing integrity concerns.
Nyachae is among the 11 candidates shortlisted for the position, with interviews set to begin on Monday, March 24, 2025. Other contenders include former Judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi, Abdulqadir Lorot Ramadhan, Edward Katama Ngeywa, and Erastus Edung Ethekon, among others.
In a memorandum submitted to the IEBC Selection Panel, KYO expressed concerns over Nyachae’s past conduct and professional history, arguing that he does not meet the ethical standards outlined in Chapter Six of the 2010 Constitution.
“The Chairperson of the IEBC must be a figure who commands public trust. Any perception of bias or unethical conduct undermines the credibility of the commission and the electoral process itself,” said KYO President Johnmark Ababu.
The group further questioned Nyachae’s transparency and impartiality, warning that appointing a leader without a proven track record of integrity could erode public confidence in Kenya’s electoral system.
KYO urged the Selection Panel to consider public concerns when making its final decision to ensure the next IEBC chair is widely accepted and trusted.
The panel is expected to conclude the interview process in the coming weeks before presenting a final shortlist to President William Ruto for appointment.
