Evelyn Cheluget,The Director General Department of Immigration Signing Passport Backlog clearance exercise

The Department of Immigration chaired by Director General Evelyn Cheluget yesterday launched an initiative for the clearance of passport backlog and collection of 87,574 passports.

The Immigration DG Evelyn Cheluget has so far announced plans to bolster the staffing capacity for processing passports especially for individuals requiring urgent services.

This came after recent data revealed a doubling in the number of people seeking passports over the course of three years.

DG Cheluget has always been at the forefront urging staff at the Immigration Department to undergo a paradigm shift in their approach to service delivery.

Details in the department indicate that the number of those seeking passports increased from 390,432 in 2019/2020 to 518,279 in 2022/2023.

Cheluget who assumed office in May 2023 said that her department needed to intensify its efforts in passport processing and that the only way to ensure Kenyans enjoy excellent service delivery in the department was through increasing staff to cater to the needs of those seeking passports for medical and other critical reasons abroad.

With her eyes on the future, Cheluget said all departmental challenges would be addressed before the end of 2023.
