Two popular TikTok stars in Kano, Nigeria, are set to be married by order of a court after their romantic videos were branded “immoral” by state authorities.
A magistrate court in Kano has directed the Hisbah Board to marry off content creators Idris Mai-wushirya and Basira Yar-guda within 60 days, following accusations that their social media clips violated public morality.
The ruling, delivered by Magistrate Halima Wali, stated that failure to carry out the wedding within the set timeframe would amount to contempt of court. The court also ordered the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board to supervise the marriage process.
The pair were recently arraigned for allegedly producing and sharing “obscene” videos online. The footage, which showed the two TikTokers sharing affectionate moments, went viral, sparking outrage among conservative groups in the state.
Mr. Mai-wushirya was remanded in prison earlier this month before the case took a dramatic turn with the marriage directive. The Hisbah commander, Aminu Daurawa, confirmed that the agency has contacted the parents of both TikTokers to begin wedding preparations.
He said the groom’s family has already responded, while they are still waiting for the bride’s relatives from Zamfara to give their consent. Daurawa added that both will undergo mandatory medical and drug tests as required by Kano State law.
A well-wisher has already volunteered N250,000 as a bride price donation, paving the way for the marriage to be concluded within two weeks once all requirements are met.
The unusual case has sparked debate online, with many questioning whether marriage should be used as punishment for what authorities call “immoral behaviour.” Others have praised the ruling as a “moral correction” in line with Islamic values.
