IPOA Goes After Rogue Kayole Cops

The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the death of a man in Nairobi’s Kayole Estate after he was assaulted by police.

IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori said the investigations will probe whether the death falls within their mandate.

They will also seek to establish whether the deceased succumbed to injuries allegedly caused by police during curfew hours.
“Pursuant to Section 25 of IPOA Act which requires that deaths that result from police action or are caused by members of the National Police Service while on duty be investigated, the Authority launched investigations into the death,” Makori said in statement.

Police in Kayole engaged locals in running battles on Thursday after a 38-year-old man was allegedly assaulted and died during curfew hours.

The residents took to the streets over the death of John Kiiru, claiming he was murdered by police officers who were enforcing the dusk to dawn curfew.

They blocked feeder roads leading to Kayole with burnt tyres and stones, disrupting transport in the area.

It took police hours to remove the body of Kiiru from the scene.

His widow, Esther Wanjiru said Kiiru was attacked and left for dead at Tushauriane Stage on Wednesday night.
