Israel and Ukraine have announced the launch of a bilateral dialogue focused on countering the threat posed by Iran, signaling a deepening of strategic ties between the two nations.

The agreement was unveiled during a joint press conference in Kyiv on Wednesday, attended by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, the highest-ranking Israeli official to visit Ukraine since 2023.

“Our countries face common security challenges. Today we have decided to launch a separate dialogue on the Iranian threat,” Sybiga said, describing Iran as an “existential threat” to global security.

Saar echoed the concerns, stating that efforts to limit Iran’s access to weapons and technology were essential for the safety of both Europe and Ukraine. He also thanked President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian government for supporting Israel’s stance that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons.

Israel has long accused Iran of pursuing nuclear arms, a claim Tehran denies. Meanwhile, Ukraine has repeatedly condemned Iran for supplying Russia with Shahed drones, which Moscow uses in its ongoing invasion.

Though Ukraine has previously criticized Israel’s neutrality regarding the war with Russia, shared concerns over Iran appear to be fostering closer cooperation. Just last month, Israel launched a surprise bombing campaign against Iranian military and nuclear facilities, an action Kyiv publicly supported.

Both countries now aim to align more closely in confronting what they view as a mutual and growing threat from Tehran.
