Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez is facing a new copyright lawsuit after posting photos of herself at a Hollywood event earlier this year. The images, shared on her Instagram and X accounts, were taken outside the Chateau Marmont as she arrived at the Amazon MGM Studios and Vanity Fair Party in Los Angeles, the night before January’s Golden Globe Awards.
Photographer Edwin Blanco and celebrity photo agency Backgrid claim they own the rights to the two images, which show Lopez in a white dress and faux fur coat. In separate lawsuits, they argue that Lopez did not obtain the necessary permissions before publishing the photos, which they allege were used to promote her public image and commercial affiliations.
“Ms Lopez’s unauthorized use of the images is commercial in nature, intended for the purpose of self-promotion,” the court filings state. The lawsuits further contend that the posts, captioned “GG Weekend Glamour,” were aimed at boosting user engagement and promoting fashion brands associated with the star.
Backgrid and Blanco are each seeking up to $150,000 in damages per photo, citing copyright infringement. While Lopez’s representatives reportedly discussed a settlement following the posts, the legal documents claim no final agreement has been signed.
Lopez is no stranger to such legal battles. She has previously faced similar lawsuits in 2019 and 2020 for reposting paparazzi photos without permission. Other celebrities, including Dua Lipa, Gigi Hadid, and Khloe Kardashian, have also been sued under similar circumstances.
The case underscores ongoing tensions between celebrities and photographers over image rights in the age of social media.
