Two second-year students at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) have been arraigned at Milimani Law Courts for allegedly stealing Sh25 million NCBA (K) Bank through hacking. – By Enock Mukoma.
They are further charged with conspiracy to defraud the bank of sh 190, million.
The two Anthony Mwangi and co accused Ann wambui are alleged to have committed the offence on or before 20th October 2020.
The sh 25.4 million conspiracy targeted NCBA Upper Hill head office.
The two made an application for lenient bail terms on grounds of being students and about to start their exams.
“They are students at JKUAT and are to start their examination. Wanyoike is 21 years and Wambui is 23 years,” said defense Lawyer Arunda oJchoe.
Lawywer Arunda sought a shs100,000 cash bail arguing that one of the accused had taken it upon himself to inform the bank that their system had loopholes that could be penetrated.
He further presented that the alleged crimes happened on an IT platform, particularly a mobile phone.
It is Mwangi who informed the bank that there was a system breach through Twitter and was subsequently summoned to appear at the bank for an inquiry.
“They presented themselves before the bank and we were not arrested,” said Ojchoe.
The prosecution objected the proposal of a 100,000 cash bail as being too lenient and urged the magistrate to consider the amount involved.
The accused were handed a Sh500,000 cash bail or bond of Sh2 million.
They will be back in court for pre-trial in November.
