JSS Teachers Strike: KUPPET Appeals for Parliamentary Intervention

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (Kuppet) has asked [parliament to intervene in ending the countrywide Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers’ protest – arguing that it is impeding learning for Grade 7 and 8 learners.

Kuppet Secretary-General Akelo Misori in a letter to the National Assembly, copied to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the National Treasury – called for the employment of the JSS teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.

He told the National Assembly Education and Research Committee that the JSS teachers are critical in the implementation and realisation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Kuppet appealed to the Treasury to allocate money for the employment of the 46,000 JSS teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.

“Kuppet affirms our readiness to work with the National Treasury and other government organs in resolving this issue within the law,” Misori said in the letter.

The union called for a meeting with TSC within seven days, arguing that the matter can only be resolved through dialogue. Misori wants the commission and the teachers to work on a strategic return-to-work formula.

Interning primary school teachers are currently paid a monthly stipend of Ksh15,000 and their JSS counterparts, Ksh20,000 all subject to tax.

Nairobi County JSS teachers Chairman Owino Okello reiterated that the tutors will remain out of school until their issues are resolved.
