Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi has been formally charged with two counts of conspiracy to defeat justice and giving false information, after allegedly stage-managing his own abduction and making misleading public statements.

Koimburi, who appeared frail and was assisted into the Milimani Law Courts by aides, pleaded not guilty before Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi.

He is accused of orchestrating a fake kidnapping in May and later claiming—through a YouTube press statement filmed at Karen Hospital—that he had been abducted and tortured by criminals, information the prosecution says was false and incited public panic.

He now faces charges under the Penal Code and the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act. His alleged motive, according to investigators, was to evade arrest and prosecution in a separate land fraud case.

“I urge this court to release me on bond so I can attend a scheduled medical appointment. I am not a flight risk,” Koimburi pleaded.

The prosecution, led by state counsels Victor Owiti and Norah Awiti, did not oppose bail. The magistrate granted Koimburi a cash bail of Sh300,000 and ordered him to appear before the investigating officer for fingerprint processing.

Koimburi’s alleged co-conspirators — Kanyenya-ini MCA Grace Nduta Wairimu, Peter Kiratu Mbari, David Macharia Gatana, and Cyrus Muhia — were charged earlier this month with similar offences.

Prosecutors say the group colluded on May 25 in the Mugutha area of Juja to simulate an abduction and derail pending legal action against the MP, who was due to face land fraud charges as per a directive from the Director of Public Prosecutions dated May 20.

Kiratu also faces charges of publishing false information after falsely reporting Koimburi’s abduction to police at Mugutha Police Station, triggering an official report based on what authorities say was a fabricated narrative.

Magistrate Ekhubi upheld the existing bond terms for Koimburi and his co-accused, requiring each to provide three contact persons. The court also directed the police to conclude investigations into several detained vehicles linked to the suspects, which reportedly contain cheque books and title deeds.

The case is set for mention on August 5, 2025, for pre-trial directions.
