Julian Nagelsmann Takes Over High-Flying Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich on Tuesday signed RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann to take over from Hansi Flick next season on a five-year contract, bringing to Munich one of Europe’s most sought after young managers.

The German champions have paid a record-breaking €25 million to acquire the RB Leipzig manager in the hope that his methods will make them unstoppable.

Nagelsmann’s approach is a combination of coaching and motivation, which he suggests is 35-40 per cent tactics and 60-65% leadership.

The social aspect of managing a football team is crucial for him, especially as when he was first appointed, he entered a dressing room where many of the players he was coaching were older than him.

Nagelsmann arrived in Munich as one of the most highly rated young coaches in Europe. The 33-year-old came into the Bundesliga in 2016 and has quickly risen to the top.

He first rescued Hoffenheim from relegation before leading them to the Champions League for the first time and then taking over Leipzig with whom he reached the Champions League semi-finals.

In the past six years, he was in talks with Bayern on more than one occasion. Already in 2017, the German record champions considered Nagelsmann for the managerial position but had concerns about his lack of experience. These concerns have disappeared.

Nicknamed ‘Baby Mourinho’, Nagelsmann has developed a reputation as one of the best young coaches in Europe and had also been linked with the vacant managerial post at Tottenham.

Nagelsmann will succeed Hansi Flick, who last week asked Bayern to terminate his contract at the end of the season after several disagreements with sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.

The club also confirmed an agreement had now been reached for the early termination of Flick’s contract which was originally set to run until 2023.
