The convicts in the brutal Baby Sagini’s attack had their sentencing day in court today where Sagini’s cousin Ochogo was sentenced to 40 years in prison, grandmother Rael Nyakerario sentenced to 5 years and aunty Pacificah Nyakerario sentenced to 10 years.
Alex Ochogo, Rael Nyakerario and Pacificah Nyakerario were all charged with causing grievous body harm on Baby Brighton Sagini.
According to the charge sheet and evidence tabled in Court, the three are said to have gouged out Sagini’s eyes on December 12, 2022.
It was a barbaric act that attracted public outcry with the former Nairobi Governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko offering to fly Sagini to India for eye transplant. This extended Courtesy by Sonko was however met with criticism forcing him to withdraw his support.
Throughout the trial, Sagini’s sister said on the material day, they went to the river to fetch water as usual.
However, Baby Sagini did not show up back at home allegedly after he had lost his water jerrican.
The next day, she said, someone told their grandmother that he had been dumped at the maize plantation.
She alleged that her grandmother chased her away later in the day.
A Magistrate at the Kisii Law Courts convicted the three suspects linked to the gouging out of Baby Sagini’s eyes after the prosecution successfully proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt.
In the ruling, the Magistrate said the suspects were fully involved in the gouging of Baby Sagini’s eyes.
