Kalonzo: ODM-Kenya Kwanza Coalition Will Collapse Before 2027

Kalonzo Musyoka has dismissed speculation that President William Ruto is forging an electoral pact with Oginga Odinga’s ODM party ahead of the 2027 general election, describing the idea as premature and doomed to collapse.

Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper party and a longtime ally of Odinga, told a public gathering on Sunday that reports of a formal 2027 coalition were being amplified by political operatives seeking to project strength.

“We have seen in the media that they are now forming a 2027 coalition,” he said. “First, it will fall apart before the 2027 general election. You will not believe it.”

Musyoka, was in coalition with Raila in the Azimio coalition during the 2022 contest, insisted that younger voters remained vigilant against what he called attempts at voter suppression.

He praised the political awakening of Generation Z, saying the youth were increasingly determined to shape Kenya’s future.

The remarks follow a string of by-election victories last week for candidates backed by Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance and ODM, prompting the president to hail the results as proof of the power of unity.

Speaking in Garissa county on Saturday, Ruto thanked supporters from both parties for delivering wins in Baringo, Banisa, Malava, Magarini, Ugunja and Kasipul.

“Those who said there is strength in unity knew what they were talking about,” he said.

Senior ODM figures echoed the president’s sentiment. Siaya senator Oburu Odinga, the elder brother of Raila Odinga, described the by-election triumphs as an endorsement of the broad-based government formed after the 2022 election.

“We crashed them at the ballot,” he declared, while hinting that cooperation between ODM and UDA could continue into the next national vote.

Despite the celebratory tone from the ruling side, opposition voices insist that any formal pre-election alliance remains unlikely and would struggle to survive Kenya’s fractious political landscape.

With less than two years until the 2027 contest, the flurry of statements underscores the early manoeuvring now under way across the country’s divided political class.
