A host of 50 leaders have made their way to Deputy President William Ruto’s residence in Karen, Nairobi to discuss on the faction’s position on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI). – By Gerald Gekara.
DP Ruto, who expressed his reservations without fear of opposition from his boss, has led politicians on a heightened campaign against the document, accusing its proponents of using the constitution for political gain.
The outcome of the meeting is set to shape political developments in the coming weeks, after the BBI Secretariat announced that more than 2 Million signatures were appended in support of the ammendments.
His side has however insisted on the need to have consensus on the document, other than pushing the country to an expensive referendum.
Over the weekend, DP Ruto made comments that showed he was ready to support the document, sending supporters into confusion as to what his official stance is on the document.
“I’ve CONSTITUTIONAL duty to assist my boss, the PRESIDENT.We’ve made IMPROVEMENTS to BBI post bomas. Now working on CONSENSUS for kenyans to have REAL CHOICES to decide/vote while avoiding yes/no,all/nothing DIVISION.We avoided lose-lose we can overcome win-lose to achieve WIN-WIN” Ruto Tweeted.
The move followed visible dismay from his supporters, and others congratulating him for ‘putting the country’s needs first.’
The Karen Declaration, as many have reffered the meeting, will make or break progress made by the BBI team to ammend the constitution in line with the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.
