Detectives in Kiambaa, Kiambu county, are investigating a case that led to the death of a taxi driver after a Kenya Certificate Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate confessed to killing him.

According to the police, Mr. Stephen Kimani, the taxi driver, had agreed to carry the candidate to his upcountry using his taxi and they agreed on Ksh. 30,000 as payment.

The seventeen-year-old Elijah had indicated that he was going to visit a patient at the Kisii Teaching Referral Hospital whom the family wanted to be transferred to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital for further treatment.

Enticed by the offline sweet deal, the driver left Nairobi for Kisii at midnight on February 11 and arrived at the hospital at 9 a.m. on February 12. While they were eating breakfast, Elijah called his contact, Maxwell Nyangoya, 22.

Nyangoya later joined them and said the patient’s relative, who was to pay for the taxi, was in Kericho town.

Elijah and Nyangoya then convinced Kimani to drive to Kericho so he could be paid Sh15,000 as part of the deal.

According to Elijah’s confession, they turned against the driver on the way and stabbed him in the neck and stomach. They then dumped his body at a thicket at Kipranya village in Kericho County.

“The scene was visited and the body of the deceased found with a stab wound on the stomach and physical injuries on the chest, back and both hands.” Read part the police report.

Detectives from Kiambaa’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) tracked the two using their mobile data where they found the stolen car at Elijah’s home.

Detectives said their aim was to steal the vehicle, but when they were unable to dispose of it, Elijah drove it home.

“He confessed to killing Kimani jointly with another suspect. He led the officers to a thicket in Kipranya village where they dumped the body. Officers from Sondu collected the body from the scene. They also recovered Kimani’s motor vehicle, registration number KCW 782V,” read the police report.

Both Elijah and Nyangoya will face charges of murder, robbery with violence, and kidnapping.

The taxi driver, Stephen Maina, will be buried at his Home in Kiambaa.

His widow, Ms. Sarah Macharia, 33, ruled out business rivalry, saying the suspects were not known to them.
