Kenya National Highway Authority has stepped up its crackdown on overloading trucks to safeguard inter-county roads.
The mobile weighbridge unit patrols roads linking towns to curb overloading among vehicles that ferry building materials and foodstuffs.
The unit is a multi-agency operation involving the National Police service and Axle load control officers.
Speaking during a media tour of the Voi-Taveta-Mombasa road, the KENHA officials say axle load compliance has been improved since the unit was rolled out.
“We have seen a reduction in cases of overloading trucks. This is a good sign that the methods are working and we call upon more drivers to observe the axle load requirements. “
Despite complaints over the frequency of the operations, KENHA has urged transporters to comply as this will in turn lower the costs of truck maintenance.
He advised transporters to observe the East African Community scheduled for 2021-2030, which went into effect on January 1, 2021
