Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA) will drive the construction of the Rapid Bus Transit System(BRT) being implemented on Thika Super Highway. Engineering Design and Supervision of the entire construction BRT will be done by KeNHA. Documents seen by Uzalendo News confirm that the Nairobi Metropolititsn Transport Authority(NaMMATA) will only operate the buses.
Essentially, NaMMATA will procure buses and bring a semblance of order to the public transport chaos in Nairobi. ” NaMMATA is charged with operations of the BRT through private bus operators”, a document seen by Uzalendo news says.
Phase one of the project starts at Clay works, through Hailesasie to Kenyatta National Hospital. A park and ride facility will be erected at Kasarani to serve commuters to the City center. Here, pick up buses will be allowed to pick passengers headed for town.
Bus stages will be constructed on existing footbridges. There are 8 footbridges along Thika Road that serve an estimated 1 million people daily. The two innermost lanes will pilot the project, with 100 buses deployed. The BRT project will ease congestion in Nairobi and ensure smooth operations in Thika Road. The superhighway is the busiest in Africa and is often prone to traffic jams. KeNHA is among the most trusted parastatals in Kenya having constructed more than 10000 kilometers of roads in the last 10 years.
