Kenya’s Kennedy Odede has been awarded the 2025 United Nations Nelson Mandela Prize in recognition of his transformative work in urban informal settlements. The announcement was met with widespread congratulations from the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) and members of the Diplomatic Corps.
Odede, the founder of Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), has been lauded for initiatives that have improved the lives of more than 2.5 million people annually across Kenya. His organisation focuses on community-led solutions to poverty, education, health care, and gender-based violence in underserved areas.
In a statement following the announcement, Odede expressed deep gratitude and humility.
“I am deeply humbled and honoured to receive the 2025 Nelson Mandela Prize,” he said. “This recognition is not mine alone — it belongs to the resilient communities in Kenya’s urban informal settlements, whose strength, hope, and determination inspire me every day.”

He also thanked UNON and diplomatic partners for their support, adding that the award renews SHOFCO’s commitment to building a more just, inclusive, and dignified world.
Odede’s approach has received international recognition for its emphasis on dignity, equity, and grassroots leadership. From education programs and water access points to digital inclusion and women’s empowerment, SHOFCO’s model has become a reference point for community-driven development in Africa.
The Nelson Mandela Prize is awarded by the United Nations every five years to individuals who have dedicated their lives to the service of humanity. Past recipients include global icons in peacebuilding, education, and human rights.
As Kenya continues to grapple with rapid urbanisation and growing inequality, Odede’s work stands as a powerful reminder of the impact of local leadership and community resilience.
